STANDARDS: WHEN A MATTRESS CAN CLAIM IT’S A QUALITY ITEM.

Today, thanks to the Technical Standards devised by international and domestic authorities, the Quality of a product can be measured precisely; the measurement is provided by the results of specific tests the product has been subjected to.

Quality can be defined as the sum of characteristics that an item must have to meet a specific need; these characteristics are directly tied to the behavior/performance of the items when it is subjected to energetic/energy or environmental stresses.

Only the most strictly objective tests, set by established standards can result in certified compliance with the qualitative standards needed to classify the product as a Quality mattress.

The technical standards covering mattresses are subdivided into three categories: dimensional, performance and safety. Here are the primary ones:

Standards for mattresses for home use
• UNI 10707:2003: "Mattresses - Test methods and requirements"
• UNI EN 1334:1998: "Furniture for the home. Beds and mattresses - Methods of measurement and recommended tolerances"
• UNI EN 1957:2001: "Furniture for the home. Beds and mattresses - Test methods for determining functional characteristics (durability test)" - The European standard establishes the test methods for determination of durability and firmness of mattresses. Compared to the standard parameters, the Consortium of Italian Manufacturers of Quality Mattresses has defined in its own Regulation, an expansion of the test duration up to forty five thousand cycles: fifty percent more than required by the EU standard, to offer a greater guarantee to the consumer.
• UNI EN 1725:2000: "Furniture for the home. Beds and mattresses -Safety requirements and test methods"

Standards for mattresses designed for children’s cots
• UNI 11036:2003: "Mattresses for children’s beds. Dimensional requirements, safety requirements and test methods"

 Standards for contract mattresses
